What is Web Hosting?
Web hosting is the act of renting space and bandwidth through a company so that you may publish your web site online.

You can either opt for free hosting that is usually supported with banners and pop ups, or may opt to get paid web hosting, which gives you complete control over your site contents.

How long does it take to set up service ?
This is process normally takes a few hours, as long as your credit card is approved. You will receive your welcome and setup information by email. Remember, it can take longer for your domain name to point to your new account. However, as soon as you receive your welcome message by email, you are ready to use your new account with your IP number.

back to Q-list

How do I upload my website files?
All hosting accounts come with an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) account which allows you to upload files to your account via an FTP Client. If you do not have an FTP Client, we offer links to download one for free in our help section. Almost all site design programs like Adobe Pagemill, Macromedia Dreamweaver, GoLive HotDog, Allaire HomeSite, CyberStudio, HotMetal Pro, Netscape Communicator and NetObjects Fusion use FTP to maintain your site

All Accounts come with FTP and a Web based method to upload files via your control panel.

I am not very experienced in building a web site. Is it easy to learn with your services?
You may wish to use Microsoft FrontPage, Maromedia Dreamweaver or one of the dozens of free WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get) programs out there on the net to build your site. Check out the free software and shareware available at www.hotfiles.com or www.download.com

Also, we include a html editor in the file manager section of your control panel. (Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher must be installed on your computer to use this feature)

back to Q-list

Do you advertise or put pop-up ads on my site?
No, your site is yours, we do not force any advertising on your site.

back to Q-list

What is Uptime?
Uptime is literally what it means - it is the amount of time your site is online throughout the entire month.

The best uptime would be 100%, but because things can break, many hosts offer 99.9% uptime guarantees. This means that if your site is not accessible for more than 43 minutes in a single month, they will reimburse you, depending on their terms of service.

back to Q-list

Why did some web hosting company offer unmetered bandwidth and you charge for over bandwidth?
BEWARE of hosting companies that offer unlimited or unmetered bandwidth, because normally their bandwidth get abused by certain people for distributing files for download, porn sites or free downloads. And because of this, your site which is hosted sharing with them will get the effect and your site performance can be extremely slow compare to hosting companies that charge for over bandwidth.

back to Q-list

I am using too much bandwidth! Is there anyway for me to make it less?
In most cases, yes.

You should first try to optimize the graphics on your website. Many GIFs look just as good with fewer colors, and many JPEGs look just as good with a higher compression level. Use a graphic editor like adobe photoshop or Corel Draw, etc etc to compress your image.

You should also analyze the HTML of your site. Make sure you use relative paths, so that images are not downloaded more than one time. Remove any extra spacing and when linking to other pages, use relative paths and not absolute links.

Best of all, optimizing your page like this makes the user experience better as your site will load faster for them!

back to Q-list

Can I host more than one site within my account?
Absolutely! Each plan includes a certain number of add-on domains. Each add-on domain may be created in your control panel and will allow you to have a different page show up for a different domain name. This means you don't need a separate hosting account for more than one web site. Keep in mind that you will still only have one control panel to manage the sites. If you need a separate control panel, you will need to contact us.
Our Power-Pak plan offer massively huge bandwidth and websites you could host.

What exactly is space and bandwidth/data transfer?
Diskspace is the size your website can be. Every single letter on your website has to be stored somewhere on your web host's server. Each letter is one byte, and a megabyte is roughly one million bytes. HTML pages are usually very small, but it is the extra images, scripts, and even databases that can take up large amounts of disk space.

Bandwidth/Transfer is the amount of data the server will allow your site to send in a month. Transfer is usually measured in gigabytes - billions of bytes. Once you go over your monthly limit, a host may either shut your site down for the remainder of the month or it can charge you 'overage.' This overcharge is usually about $2.00-$5.00 per extra gigabyte of transfer.

What is a Domain Name?
A Domain name is an Internet Address that will uniquely identify your website. You might have visited websites such as http://www.CheapDotNet.com, http://www.microsoft.com or http://www.yahoo.com. These are all examples of Domain names.

Having a Domain Name will allow you to have an e-mail address such as [email protected] for example.

To see if your Virtual Domain is available, and is not used by anybody else, please, visit InterNIC's WHOIS database, and type in the domain name of your choice. If there will be no match, you are can register that domain name, else you have to choose another one.

back to Q-list

What is a subdomain?
Consider subdomains as an extension of your domain. For example, your site is www.example.com. A subdomain would be test.example.com, and another would be webhosting.example.com.

Subdomains are usually treated as separate sites from the main domain site.

back to Q-list

Do I have to change my domain if I get a new host?
No. Provided that the domain is registered in your name (as it should be), you can simply update your nameservers (from where you manage your domain names) to that of your new host or domain transfer.

back to Q-list

Do you handle the domain registration process?
Yes, we can handle and register new domains for you at a discount. If you are transferring a domain, you will need to handle the domain transfer yourself. We include all the information you need to contact your registrar and move the domain to our servers in the welcome email you receive after signing up. If you still have problems, email our support team and see if we can help.

What if I don't have or want my own domain name?
You can sign using a third-level domain (sub-domain).(i.e. yourname.CheapDotNet.com)
Simply decide what third level domain you would like to use. Then when signing up, type in the entire domain (i.e. joe.CheapDotNet.com) You will still get all the features including your own IP number and control panel. All email will work with joe.CheapDotNet.com, etc.

Who transfers my existing domain to your server?
You are responsible to make sure your domain points to our server. We will provide you with our nameservers which are needed to make this change. If you still need help, we will be glad to assist you, just contact our Customer Services.

back to Q-list

What steps do I need to take to get my domain transferred and my files uploaded to your servers?

Step 1: Sign up with us.

Step 2: Within 24 hours you will receive an email from us stating that your account has been set up and issuing you an IP number.

Step 3: Transfer your content and test your site on our server with your IP number. You use the IP number just like a domain name. For example, if we give you a temporary URL, you can put that URL browser as http://yourserver.temporay.com to see what your pages will look like on our server. You can also use the url to upload your files with FTP, or log into your control panel using the address included in your welcome e-mail to access our web based file manager.

Step 4: Then email a domain name transfer request to the appropriate registrar company, the company that you initially registered your domain name through. Use the nameservers that are on the signup form when transferring your domain name.

Step 5: Once you verify the transfer, the registrar will point your domain name to our name server, and the rest of the world will be able to access your new site on our server with the domain name.

back to Q-list

If I register a domain through your registrar, what is my total cost, and does the domain belong to me?
First, we charge $13.00 per year to register a .com .net or .org domain for you. You can register a domain for as little as 1 year. If you would like to check the availability of a domain, click here and type in the name, if it shows up without a match, it is available! The charge for a domain varies by registry. There is no additional charge to get a domain name (except normal monthly hosting fees of course).

If we register a domain name for you, it is indeed your name and you can take it to another host if you wish.

back to Q-list

Will my domain work both with the 'www' and without it?
Yes, you can access your site using both www.domain.com, and domain.com.

back to Q-list

What is Static IP Address and Do I need static IP Address to host my site?
A Static IP means that your site is hosted on a single IP Address without sharing with others. And The reason why people need static IP purely because of they need to use SSL in their site, and if you didnt need to use SSL on your site, then you don't need static IP as it can cost you more money. In terms of performance or reliability, both static IP and dedicated IP are the same.
